Introduction: Candida albicans is one of the most common etiologic factors in denture stomatitis. Controlling of Candida attachments and colonization on denture base is necessary for prevention of denture stomatitis. The aim of this study was to compare the properties of microwave disinfection, sodium hypochlorite and nystatin in acrylic resin plates infected with Candida albicans. Methods: In this experimental study, 52 square shapes, 50×50×2 mm heat-cured acrylic resin plates were incubated with 1×103 C. albicans suspension to form experimental candida biofilm. The average number of candida cells, which adhered to 10 randomly selected acryl resin plates, was firstly determined and the remaining were divided into 3 groups of 12 and one 6 that were disinfected by microwave (540 watt, 1min), 2% Sodium hypochlorite, Nystatin and distilled water. The viable candida cells on acrylic resin plates after disinfection, were assessed by cultivation on Sabouraud dextrose agar plates. Data was analyzed using SPSS( version 17). Moreover, ANOVA test, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests were compared. Results: All three methods thoroughly disinfected acrylic resin plates contaminated with Candida albicans (P=0.514). No statistical difference was observed between the three above methods for disinfecting of resin acryl plates, whereas this difference was significant between the microwave and the negative control groups(P=0.0001). Conclusions: Disinfection with microwave (54 watt, 1 minute) can be suggested for effective controlling of Candida biofilm and prevention of denture stomatitis.
