Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes is considered as one of the most common chronic diseases which this prevalence and incidence is increasing, particularly in the developing countries. Considering the high prevalence of diabetes in Yazd, its important role in oral complications and effect of dental treatment plans, community awareness to minimize the risk of complications plays an important role. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of patients referring to shahid sadoughi Dentistry school regarding diabetes and it's complications.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 210 patients referring to the Dentistry school of shahid sadoughi were evaluated in 2011. In order to collect the study data, a questionnaire was applied, and then the collected data were analyzed by T-test, ANOVA by SPSS software (version 16).

Results: The study participants consisted of males (35.7%) and females (64.3%) with an average age of 29.92±11.43. Based on the study results, the mean score of awareness was 8.44±5.25 out of 18 with a confidence level of 95%, and the mean score of attitude was 46.09±5.16 out of 100 with a confidence level of 95%.

Conclusion: This study findings demonstrated that level of knowledge and attitude of the patients referring to the Dentistry school of shahid sadoughi was reported to be low in regard with diabetes and its compilations. Accordingly, some strategies are needed in order to be considered to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of diabetes at the Dentistry School.
